今年の6月にミス・アメリカコンテストにでるとのことです。

彼女は、1975年の革命後ラオスを脱出したラオス人の子供で、タイ、ナポー村の難民キャンプで生まれたそうです。

1975年に終結したベトナム戦争で、米国に協力した多くのラオス人やその家族は、報復攻撃を受けながらタイに逃れたのです。

6月のミス・アメリカコンテスト、応援したいところです。

　2012年ミス・ミネソタNitaya Panemalaythongさん

　The words captivating, charismatic, and determined only begin to describe Nitaya Panemalaythong. Her path to the Miss Minnesota USA crown is simply amazing! She won her title in her first pageant competition, and is the first Asian American to hold the Miss Minnesota USA title.
　Born in a refugee camp in Thailand, Nitaya came to America as in infant in 1986. The family moved from Minneapolis, to other locations in Minnesota, then North Carolina, before Nitaya returned to Minnesota in 2004.
　Nitaya’s drive to succeed flourished in high school, where she became a National Beta Club member (recognizing academic achievement, leadership, character, and service), was selected to the Honors A Capella Ensemble as a freshman, and graduated as a North Carolina Scholar.
　Currently, Nitaya works full time in an office setting while attending Normandale Community College. Her goal is to attend the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management to obtain a degree in Finance.
　Nitaya is from Laos, and is bilingual. Her proudest accomplishment is becoming a homeowner in 2010. She and her brother in law support 10 family members, living in that home.

　今日は、ビエンチャンから150km程東南にあるボリカムサイ県の県都パクサンへ来ています。

　今日は、知人の婚約式があります。

　花嫁の家で婚約式があり、親戚一同集まって儀式を行います。

　日本で言えば結納になるのかもしれません。

　ネックレスや指輪の交換、祈祷師によるお祈り、金銭を含めた目録の披露、見届け人の挨拶等があり、お酒の回し飲み、蒸した鶏肉にからし味噌をつけて食べたり、一通りの儀式が行われました。

　儀式の後は、飲食と踊りといつものパターンです。

　争点のメコン本流のダム建設休止か？

　Laos has postponed construction of a controversial dam on the Mekong, an official said Thursday, dismissing fears that the work was going ahead despite growing regional opposition.
　"There is no construction on the Mekong river," Viraphonh Viravong, director general of the Ministry of Energy and Mines' department of electricity, told AFP by telephone.
　Thai company CH Karnchang announced in April that it had signed a contract worth $2.4 billion with the Xayaburi Power Co. "for the engineering, procurement and construction" of the Xayaburi hydroelectric power plant.
　The firm added that construction would take eight years and had commenced on March 15, sparking concern that the project was proceeding despite the concerns of countries lower down the Mekong river.

稲刈りの風景↑（2008年5月8日、サワンナケート県）

　今は、2008年5月8日。

　ビエンチャンの南500km程の所にあるサワナケート県、サイブリー郡の村に来ています。

　今は、稲刈りの真っ最中です。

　この時期に稲刈りができる田んぼは、灌漑施設が整っている地域に限られます。

　雨季の終わりの10月頃はどこでも稲刈りができますが、乾季の終わりの今は、水田面積の1割くらいしか作付されていません。

　ラオス、猛暑で電力消費増加

　Electricity consumption in Vientiane reached a record high in March after several days of high temperatures in the city.
　A peak load of 216.7MW was recorded on March 19 when the maximum temperature that day was 34.2C.
　“The reason for the high load was the greater use of electrical equipment, especially fans and air conditioners,” said Deputy Director General of Electricite du Laos for the Vientiane Region, Mr Soukhonh Chanthone.
　Temperatures rose to 35.8C on March 23, and then to 38.2C on April 25.
　One major retailer of air conditioners said workers were installing about four 4,800 BTU air conditioners every day. Last year, some 20 large retailers and other small businesses installed an estimated 45,000 air conditioners in Vientiane.
　The heat has also resulted in a higher demand for ice. Some ice makers have installed more refrigeration units and are running them for longer to keep pace with demand. Many factories and offices have also installed water coolers for their staff which has also added to the load.

ボートから見る川岸↑（2008年5月7日、サワンナケート県）

　今は、2008年5月7日。

　ビエンチャンから南に500km程の所にあるサワンナケートの町に来ています。

　今日は道路が通っていない村に行くことにしています。

　唯一の交通手段は、ボートです。

　ボートに乗って、メコン川の支流を遡ります。

　まだ雨期に入ったばっかりですので、水量はそれほど多くありません。

　川岸には、乾季の時に作られた畑がまだ十分使われています。

　もうすぐ水量が増えるとこれらの畑は水没し、半年後には肥沃な畑に生まれ変わります。

　ボートに乗って投網を持っている人がいます。

　投網を投げるつもりだったようですが、我々のボートが来たのでこちらを見ています。

　岸辺には、何人かいます。

　自家用ボートに乗って畑仕事に来ているようです。

　チャンパサックで聖なる木が倒れる

　Champassak provincial authorities have been bombarded with requests from concerned locals to rescue a sacred manikhoth tree - a holy tree in Buddhist tradition - from being swept away by the Mekong River after it toppled over last month.
　The tree stood on a rock in the middle of Khonephapeng waterfall, the thunderous 10km wide falls in southernmost Champassak province, near the Cambodian border.
　The uprooted manikhoth tree lies in the Mekong River.
　The fallen tree is still partly on land while some of the trunk lies in the river, and locals fear the holy tree will be swept away by the strong current.
　Locals want the authorities to lift the tree out of the river and display it appropriately as a cultural relic.
　According to local media, the tree fell on March 19, which has sparked public reaction as far north as Vientiane because of its perceived supernatural powers.

ラオスのベトナム料理↑（2008年5月5日、ターケーク、カムアン県）

　今は、2008年5月5日。

　ビエンチャンから南に300km位の所にあるターケークに来ています。

　ここは、カムアン県の県庁所在地。

　フランス植民地時代の雰囲気が残っていて、とても落ち着く街です。

　メコン川沿いにあり、対岸はタイのナコーンパノム。

　渡し船が行き来しています。

　昼食は、市場の近くにあるベトナム料理店。

　お店と言うより、オープンスペースにテーブルとイスを並べた屋台の延長にあるような店です。

　ラオスにはたくさんのベトナム料理店がありますが、この店の料理は素朴で、ほとんどベトナムの家庭料理ではないかと思います。

　一緒にいたラオス人が、美味しい美味しいと言って食べています。

　ラオスはメコン本流ダム計画を強行か？

　Laos said yesterday it would not make a final decision on construction of the Xayaburi dam in the main stream body of the Mekong River before approval by the international community and countries in the Lower Mekong basin over environment concerns.
　Work on the site by the Thai construction company Ch Karnchang was just preparation, mostly in the primary and exploration stage, said Lao Vice Minister of Energy and Mines Viraphonh Viravong.
　Laos has proposed building the Xayaburi Dam on the main stream Mekong, about 150 km downstream from Luang Prabang, to generate 1,260MW of power, mainly for export to Thailand.
